Greenfinch Spirit Transfer — Cyanotype Prints of Found Birds
These Spirit Transfers are created using one of the earliest forms of photography, the cyanotype process. Each print holds the ghostly silhouette of a bird I found after its natural passing, their fragile form preserved in deep indigo blue.
The name Spirit Transfers comes from their appearance: ethereal, otherworldly, as though the essence of the bird has slipped across into paper. This is achieved through cyanotype, a 19th-century technique where light-sensitive chemistry and the sun’s rays create hauntingly beautiful images. When exposed to UV light, the bird’s outline is captured, leaving behind a spectral imprint in shades of Prussian blue.
Every piece is hand-developed and limited to just 1-2 prints per specimen, so they are entirely unique – no two prints will ever be the same. They serve as a quiet memorial, a way of honouring life’s fleetingness while keeping its spirit alive in art.
